How to check a debt counsellor before sharing your details
A practical checklist for the first phone call, registration checks and paperwork.
Start with a name you can verify
A company name alone does not tell you who will handle a formal Debt Review application. Ask who the registered debt counsellor is and record their registration number. Open the NCR register yourself rather than relying only on a screenshot or a link sent in a message.
If you cannot reconcile what you find, contact the NCR through its official website. A delay while checking a detail is preferable to guessing. Registration checks are one part of due diligence; they are not a guarantee of the outcome or service you will receive.
Use a short first-call checklist
It is easy to forget questions when someone is explaining a process quickly. Keep this list beside you.
- Who is the registered counsellor responsible for my application?
- What business are you calling from and how did you receive my enquiry?
- Can you send the service description and fees in writing?
- Where should I send documents securely?
- Who do I contact about a mistake or a complaint?
Share documents deliberately
Ask why a document is needed and whether the request relates to an enquiry or an application. Avoid sending financial documents to an address you have not checked. This website’s initial screening does not request an ID number, bank login, card PIN or one-time password.
Keep your own copy of forms and correspondence. A small folder organised by date can make later questions easier to resolve. Note the person you spoke to and the next action you agreed on. You do not need to record private information in public reviews or social-media comments to raise a concern.
If something does not add up
Pause and ask for a written clarification. Do not treat a logo, a professional-looking website or a confident voice as proof. If the explanation changes between calls, refer back to your notes and request a consistent written answer.
Use official channels for complaints and avoid paying a new intermediary merely because they promise a fast fix. Check the identity of anyone offering to take over an existing process before sharing more information.
